LSI hospitality suite AV76 – MWC, Barcelona

AXM2500 reduces power consumption and physical space requirements; helps service providers seamlessly deploy heterogeneous networks and contend with data growth

MILPITAS, Calif., 21 February 2012 – LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced the AXM2500, the latest addition to its Axxia(tm) Communication Processor family. Designed for wireless access and mobile backhaul applications, the highly integrated AXM2500 combines traffic management, security and packet processing capabilities, the bridging function of an Ethernet switch, and the transport and internetworking functions of a multiservice processor in a single device.

As mobile broadband use driven by tablets and smartphones continues to grow and networks transition from 2G/3G to LTE and LTE-Advanced, operators need cost- and power-efficient solutions to migrate backhaul from legacy systems to IP-based networks. Mobile backhaul networks move traffic between cellular base stations and the core of the wired network, and are under increasing pressure as mobile broadband traffic continues to grow.

Designed for mobile applications such as indoor and outdoor microwave units, cell-site routers, packet transfer nodes and backhaul, the AXM2500 communication processor offers: * Lower power consumption and space requirements by integrating packet processing, security and switching features, which provides increased security and capabilities * Programmable flexibility and deterministic performance through the combination of PowerPC(r) 476FP processors and LSI hardware acceleration engines * Software compatibility with the entire Axxia product family, allowing software reuse across a range of solutions

“Service providers are rapidly migrating to IP-based backhaul to save costs and increase capacity,” said Noy Kucuk, vice president, marketing, Networking Components Division, LSI. “At the same time, the growth in mobile broadband is increasing the need for intelligence to be distributed throughout the network. The integrated AXM2500 meets all of these needs.”

The AXM250, manufactured in 28nm process technology, also features enhanced security through its on-chip secure system. Integrating security features directly into the communication processor increases robustness by reducing possible points of attack.

“Managing costs while meeting the ever-increasing demand for mobile broadband is a key challenge,” said Mark Hung, research director, Gartner. “Operators will benefit from more integrated IC solutions for mobile infrastructure systems, as they can reduce cost while migrating to 4G networks.”

The LSI(r) AXM2500 communication processors will be available to networking manufacturers in the second quarter of 2012. Information on the new product will be available at the LSI hospitality suite AV76 at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, 27 February to 1 March. The LSI stand is located midway along the Avenue near the crosswalk between the Courtyard and Hall 8 of the exhibition.

Embedded World 2012, Nuremberg, booth, No. 122 in hall 4A

Evaluation Platform developed with Maxim Integrated Products and Energy Micro

Poing, Germany, 14 February 2012 – Avnet Memec is launching a new energy-harvesting evaluation platform at Embedded World 2012. Based on the 32-bit Cortex-M3 EFM32 Gecko microcontroller from Energy Micro and the MAX17710 energy-harvesting charger and protector from Maxim Integrated Products (Maxim), the platform allows developers to easily access the most efficient semiconductor and energy-harvesting solutions on the market. The self-powered platform is suitable for applications such as home and building automation, smart metering, industrial automation, health and fitness electronics, and emerging applications, specifically in the domain of wireless sensor networks.

“Avnet Memec specializes in providing leading-edge technology to a large customer base in Europe. The new energy-harvesting platform is just another example of how we can help reduce the entry barrier of such ground-breaking technologies,” explained Steve Haynes, President at Avnet Memec. “We aim to be the leading distributor in the energy harvesting market, which is estimated to be more than 4 billion USD within the next decade. We are offering the best product lines in this domain with the two true leaders in energy friendly innovation: Maxim and Energy Micro.”

The energy-harvesting evaluation platform consists of two major components. The MAX17710 evaluation kit (MAX17710EVKIT) contains all the components necessary to evaluate the performance of Maxim’s energy-harvesting charger and protector. This kit plugs directly into the EFM32 Tiny Gecko Starter Kit from Energy Micro, and powers the energy friendly EFM32TG840F32 Gecko microcontroller.

The MAX17710 is the industry’s first IC to integrate all of the power-management functions for ambient energy harvesting, as well as for charging and protecting the THINERGY® Micro-Energy Cell (MEC) from Infinite Power Solutions (IPS) which is embedded on the EVKIT. Operating at an ultra-low current level, the MAX17710 accepts energy from a variety of poorly regulated energy harvesting sources with output levels ranging from 1µW to 100mW. A boost regulator circuit charges the energy-storing cell from a source as low as 0.75V (typ). An internal regulator protects the cell from overcharging. Output voltages supplied to the target applications are regulated using an efficient adjustable low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator with selectable voltages of 3.3V, 2.3V, or 1.8V. The output regulator operates in a selectable high-power or low-power mode to minimize drain of the MEC. Internal voltage protection prevents the MEC from over discharging.

“Maxim strongly believes that energy-harvesting solutions are enabling autonomous, perpetually powered solutions,” said Kuo-Chang Chan, Field Applications Director at Maxim. ”Working with the specialized distributor Avnet Memec and Energy Micro, a leader in ultra-low-power microcontrollers, will greatly accelerate the adoption of energy harvesting technologies.”

The EFM32 Tiny Gecko microcontrollers are part of the 160-device-strong EFM32 microcontroller family, ranging from 4KB to 1024KB of Flash memory and with packages from 24 to 120 pins. All products integrate the “Gecko technology,” which ensures very low active power consumption down to 150µA/MHz, a highly efficient ARM Cortex-M3 processor at 1.25DMIPS/MHz, an extremely short wake-up time of only 2µs, and a 900nA current consumption in deep sleep mode while the real-time counter, memory retention, brownout detection, and power-on-reset are enabled.

“Avnet Memec’s energy-harvesting evaluation platform will significantly reduce the development time while applying energy harvesting,” said Jürgen Hoika, Vice President Sales EMEA at Energy Micro. “Avnet Memec’s specialized approach helps the customer get premium technical support while using this platform. And a component like Maxim’s MAX17710 is a key enabling product, due to its very low quiescent current.”

EFM32 Gecko microcontrollers offer autonomous and ultra-low power peripherals. This includes a 12-bit ADC that consumes a maximum of 350µA, and a peripheral flex system, which provides autonomous interaction of peripheral events and actions in deep sleep mode without the CPU being active. The Tiny Gecko also offers the Low Energy Sense interface (LESENSE), which allows users to monitor sensors with a consumption of about 1µA.

For energy-conscious designers, the evaluation platform includes the Advanced Energy Monitoring system, enabling unique on-board energy and supply-voltage profiling without additional tools. A built-in SEGGER J-Link debugger makes it easy to perform debugging and target programming of the free LESENSE demos, which include a light sensor, inductive and capacitive touch sensors, and an 8×20 segment LCD. The free Simplicity Studio software makes all required documentation, the software and code library, and demos easy to access for those who use the energy-harvesting platform.

The energy-harvesting evaluation platform will be launched at Embedded World. A live demo will be shown at Avnet Memec’s booth, no. 122 in hall 4A. For more information please contact your local Avnet Memec office or Felix Reinwald (felix.reinwald@avnet-memec.eu)

HM78D series extended to higher inductance, better efficiency and superior current handling in a shielded low-cost part

City, Country, 14 February 2012 – TT electronics BI Technologies has extended its HM78D family of dual winding inductors with the introduction of a new model series offering higher inductance, better efficiency and superior current handling in a rugged, low cost part. The new HM78D-1210 series comes in 12.5mm footprint shielded SMD packages and, in common with other HM78D models, can be configured as inductors, common mode chokes or DC/DC converters.

With dual windings the package is suited to a broad range of applications including DC-DC single-ended primary-inductor converters (SEPIC), non-isolated voltage regulators, point of load modules, LED drivers and I/O filter chokes. The HM78D-1210 models offer inductance values from 4.7 to 470µH in parallel configuration; 18.8 to 1880µH in series.

Low resistance values ensure high-efficiency designs for SEPICs, whilst the high current ratings enable designers to save space on the PCB. Maximum DC resistance ranges from 0.014 to 0.57ohm with leads connected in parallel, 0.056 to 2.28ohm in series. In parallel, rated current is from 1.22 to 10.6A, with saturation currents 1.8A to 18.0A. Equivalent ratings in series mode are half these values.

Housed in rugged and cost-efficient packages, the lead-free devices feature shielded construction to enhance EMI performance. Operating temperature ranges from -40°C to +125°C and the inductors are supplied in tape-and-reel format for automated production.

coolux Media Systems has the best structured and most effective social networking strategy of any business-business technology company I’ve seen. Coolux provides real-time, on-location media control, compositing, editing, and 3-D image processing solutions, and its three-tier online approach is open to all, but directs resources to where they are needed.

I had a fascinating meeting with Hans Stucken, marketing and communications director, at ISE in Amsterdam last week, who explained that coolux uses Facebook and NING to complement its well-established support forum and give customers, partners and other stakeholders access appropriate to their level of engagement. The three layers have evolved over a number of years, based on the efforts of coolux customer facing team.

Hans described the coolux Facebook page as the ‘local pub’ where anyone at all can meet and interact. The next tier is the coolux user forum, which has been going a great many years, well before social media became a buzzword. The key here is that every issue raised is attended to promptly by coolux support engineers. Why raise an issue anywhere else when you can get an authoritative and swift solution here? No sneaky outsourcing of technical support to customers for coolux.

The closest level of online engagement is coolux connect, Coolux own social network built on Ning. This network is exclusively dedicated to professional users with relevant skills and experience. Each signup is individually approved by coolux, and acceptance criteria include undergoing the company’s advanced training. It provides its members with a slightly exclusive way of relating to each other professionally. The content that can be freely viewed so that it also provides a great showcase for members as well as for coolux.

“The keyword to all of our endeavours is authenticity,” Hans believes. I think that’s why it works.

ISE 2012, Amsterdam, 31st January – 2nd February Stand: #10K113

Directional Audio creates limited sound zones in open-plan commercial office space

Tampere, Finland, 1 February 2012 – Panphonics, the directional audio expert, has supplied its Sound Shower® directional audio speakers to create discrete sound atmospheres within the open plan office solution provided at United Spaces in Stockholm, Sweden. The United Spaces concept directs specific audio to specific areas to create ambience and enhance the user experience depending on how the space is used. Lexter Technology and Sound AB, a Swedish sound design company and project partner for Panphonics, used Sound Shower speakers in all public areas as they create a highly focused and directional audio footprint that delivers sound to the intended target without disturbing the surrounding area.

In the public lounge area, screens showing news channels and seminars are provided with Sound Shower speakers so tenants and visitors can choose to use a zone with or without audio. Strong sound pressure levels delivered by the speakers eliminate any interference outside the sound zone and automatic volume adjustment based on ambient noise levels ensures adequate volume during peak times.

A directional sound arena – a debate room where conferences can be held in an open space without disturbance – is another example of the innovative use of directional audio at United Spaces. In the corridors, directional sound is used to transmit audio content with natural sounds of the forest, shore or meadow, creating a pleasant working environment. Panphonics directional audio is also being used in digital signage applications to increase awareness of the visual messages, thereby increase advertising revenues without creating more background noise in already busy public areas. The speakers reproduce all voices clearly, even at very low volumes, making it easy for the listener to hear and understand the audio message.

About Panphonics Panphonics, the global leader in directional audio technology, was established in 1997 and remains a privately held company. It is the only company to have industrial-scale production capabilities of plane-wave technology, facilitating its directional audio loudspeakers. Recent growth has resulted in Panphonics products being adopted by several industry-leading customers. Panphonics opened a new production facility in September 2011 to enable it to keep up with global demand.

The company’s headquarters is located in Tampere, Finland with international sales offices located in Espoo, Finland, Amsterdam, Netherlands and USA office in Dallas,Texas.
